Just the thought of having back surgery was frightening after hearing other people’s horror stories.  But Dr. Lucien Miranne and the entire staff at Southern Brain & Spine made me comfortable about the situation.   First, Dr. Miranne actually spent almost forty-five minutes with me explaining the whole procedure and what to expect afterwards in layman’s terms (unheard of).  At the same meeting, I met with his surgical assistant and she assured me even more that I was making the right decision.   After the surgery, all questions were dealt with in a caring, thoughtful and professional manner.  Although no one looks forward to having surgery, especially back surgery, I am lucky and blessed to have dealt with Southern Brain & Spine.  They are all truly a credit to their profession. – Rich

In 2006, when I first met Dr. Voorhies, I was in very bad shape – barely able to walk without falling and in need of several complex spinal cord related surgeries.  These surgeries were made even more difficult due to several anomalies in my anatomy.  Dr. Voorhies took the time and care to fully and methodically examine and study my case from every angle before deciding what course of action was needed.  Not only did Dr. Voorhies save my life, he is also the reason I am able to walk today.  My wife and I are extremely grateful for Dr. Voorhies’ amazing talent, skill, knowledge and care, and for his wonderful support team who was there for us every step of the way.  – Terry     For your impeccable standards, vast knowledge of surgery, and your caring attitude toward me as your patient – best wishes always.  Thanks for giving me my life back! – Ginger     Dr. Rand Voorhies was the second neurosurgeon I consulted.  After my first set of tests and MRI, I was given a frank and honest opinion of the pain I had in my back.  I could have surgery or go buy myself a scooter.  After deciding to have surgery, Dr. Voorhies sat down with me and gave a detailed explanation of the surgery and the recovery.  The surgery was a success and now I am pain free and I am able to again work in my flowers.  I am very pleased with Dr. Voorhies and his staff and I would recommend him to anyone who is seeking relief from back pain like I had. – Jane     I had one of my employees that had a problem with his back.  He saw a chiropractic doctor, his family doctor, a pain management doctor, an orthopedic doctor and then about a year later he saw Dr. Rand Voorhies.  Dr. Voorhies diagnosed his problem and then, with consultation with my employee, a program of surgery and rehabilitation was put into effect.  The surgery was a success and after a short period of time he was back to work – Ted   I could no longer go out and enjoy a family day or get through a work day.  My headaches were too severe and I spent the majority of my time resting trying to make the pain go away.  My family needed me.  So I went to Dr. Voorhies like a child in need.  His words were comforting and his eyes were trusting.  He had a wisdom that was incomparable.  I needed to feel better and I had no idea of the path that lay ahead.  We made several attempts to pinpoint my pain.  Some days were hard when the attempts failed.  He and his staff made me feel like we were a team.  We were going to make the discovery that would lead to my better health.  I had to follow his instructions that lead to several tests and several other physician visits.  I trusted Dr. Voorhies’ choices.  Finally the day arrived and we were able to schedule surgery. I was very afraid but also ready to begin a new period in my life that didn’t include pain.  Dr. Voorhies was standing there when I woke up from surgery and his assurance brought me back to life.  After my recovery period I was able to get up and start my day pain free.  I am thankful that God put Dr. Voorhies in my path. – Anna     My experience with Dr. Voorhies and his whole staff has been the most remarkable in my life.  The fact that he is a brilliant neurosurgeon is only the icing on the cake.  His staff is like having guardian angels around you through everything you may encounter and experience.  They discovered through my pre-op that I had lung cancer – something I would never have suspected.  The point I’m trying to make is that they literally took over for me when I was so overwhelmed.  I didn’t know what to do.  They told me who to see and what I needed to do.  They are still there for me.  I will never be able to thank them for just being who they are.  I know Dr. Voorhies is the best in his field and he is surrounded by the best staff in the world. – Jo Ann     In the year 2002 at Ochsner Hospital, Dr. Rand Voorhies saved my life.  I came in from Nigeria not being able to raise my arms, and my legs were becoming numb.  After the emergency surgery, Dr. Voorhies told my wife that I had only about four or five days left before I would have become paralyzed from the neck down.  Eight years later I had to have lower back surgery.  It was a successful nine hour surgery – unfortunately, I had a heart attack during the surgery.  I woke up in the CCU surrounded by the best doctors in the hospital.  Two weeks later an angiogram showed that I had to have bypass heart surgery.  I had to have two major surgeries within two weeks.  I’ve had praise from other doctors the majority statement was “The Best”.  I am so fortunate to have had doctors like Dr. Dugan, Dr. Tubb and last but not least Dr. Voorhies taking care of me.  Like the other doctors said I’ve had “The Best”.  – Edison     I am writing to express my appreciation for the wonderful treatment and care that you and your staff have shown me since becoming a patient in 2009.  In light of my situation, I was very nervous but after my initial visit, you and your staff have been very personable, displaying much support, kindness, reassurance and professionalism, to not only myself, but my spouse.  Dr. Voorhies, you have demonstrated your total commitment, patience, sensitivity and genuine concern into caring for me prior to and after my operations, answering any questions or concerns, which has been a great partnership of encouragement in knowing that my faith and confidence would lead me on the path to healing and rehabilitation, which means so much to me.  Again, I would like to particularly thank your assistant, Janell, as she has shared her wealth of knowledge and professionalism with me as a patient.  I am also gracious for Mary, Christie and Melissa, as they have been an integral part in my treatment and recovery.  They have shown great care and concern in assisting me with regards to referral physicians, testing and insurance processes with the utmost professionalism and patience.  Thanks to you all, for I am very gracious for your unwavering support and commitment.  Thank you all once again and may your organization continue to prosper and touch the lives of others, where I will be proud to share and refer anyone that would require your expertise.  – Joel     Dr. Voorhies is a wonderful doctor with immense knowledge in treating spinal injuries.  If it wasn’t for him, I don’t think I would have recovered as well as I have.  I had a severe spinal injury and had two surgeries a year apart.  I wore a neck brace after my first surgery and a halo after my second surgery.  It was a long and painful process, but I have done well in my recovery.  Although the accident left me disabled, I truly believe that Dr. Voorhies’ expertise and his staff got me back to where I can take my grandchildren fishing, and enjoy my family to the best of my limitations.  – Buddy

Thank you so much for rearranging your schedule and quickly getting me to surgery.  Once again, I feel that I have my life back!  Wishing you and your family a fun and safe summer. – Shelley P.   We wanted to express our heartfelt thanks to you for what you’ve done for our family.  We are truly grateful and fortunate to have been referred to you by Jeremy and so appreciate that you rearranged your schedule to accommodate our mom’s surgery as quickly as you did.  As you know, she was in a tremendous amount of pain, so much so that she was deteriorating slowly, both physically and mentally.  Thanks to you, her pain has gone down considerably and you’ve given our family hope during this very difficult time – hope for a better quality of life for our mom.  You are an amazing neurosurgeon and although we do not know you personally (aside from a few stories that Jeremy has mentioned), we know from your actions that you are a kind, caring and wonderful person.  Please accept this gift (idea taken from one of those stories!) as a token of our appreciation. – Sue A.   I enjoyed visiting with you at my post operative “graduation” appointment on March 31. Unfortunately, I managed to get away without expressing my sincere gratitude for your care and treatment and the excellent results you obtained.  I know a number of physicians personally and have dealt with many professionally in the course of my practice over the years.  Your character, bedside manner, personality and skill are certainly exceptional and the combination rarer still.  I very much enjoyed being your patient and will highly recommend you, given the opportunity.  Please also express my thanks and appreciation to your entire staff, including Michelle.  All were extremely professional and helpful at every stage.  – L.B.   This card is a small token of my gratitude and appreciation to you and your team for the wonderful care and treatment I received.  Erin, Michelle and Kriste were very thorough, professional, and courteous through all phases of my care.  Kriste did an excellent job explaining the procedure during my preoperative consultation and has been a tremendous resource during my recovery.  I have suffered with neck and shoulder pain most of my adult life, so I am extremely pleased to be nearly pain free after just six weeks since I had my surgery.  My overall quality of life has been dramatically improved and I am thankful.  Finally, I would like to compliment you as a physician and your exceptional skills as a surgeon.  You have been reassuring and confident, but most importantly personable and kind.  Please know that you and your team at Southern Brain and Spine are greatly appreciated. – Martin M.

Since 2007, I have been having lower back problems and my old remedy was numerous epidural injections.  Then about six months ago the injections no longer eased my back pain.  I contacted SBS for a second opinion on my lower back problems and my doctor knew immediately the cause and solution of my problem.  Eventually, he suggested and I begged for back surgery, and today my lower back problems are history.  The care, concern, follow-up phone calls, and success of my lower back surgery never can be adequately thanked.  SBS gave me my life back! – Joseph

I came to Dr. Miranne knowing that I had a bone spur on my cervical spine between the 5th and 6th vertebra that was sending electrical shocks down my left arm to my fingers.  He looked at my x-rays and said “I can fix this”.  He explained everything in great detail and made me feel very confident in him.  Dr. Miranne was referred to me by my best friend and two neighbors.  All of them are patients of his and are doing great.  Three months ago I had surgery and I have not felt that pain again.  I am exercising again and I feel wonderful!  He has given me my life back.  I am so grateful.  Thank you Dr. Miranne.  – Crystal

When I had my accident on the job, my first thought was “there goes my career as a firefighter”.  I suffered a herniated disc at L4-5.  For the next month, my days were spent laying on the floor, taking painkillers and barely being able to walk.  After my surgery, the pain in my leg was gone.  I was up and walking hours after surgery.  I am still a few weeks from going back to work but I know I will be able to perform my job to its fullest thanks to Dr. Miranne and Southern Brain and Spine.  – Christopher     The decision to have back surgery was difficult, but deciding which neurosurgeon would perform the surgery was easy.  Dr. Miranne has provided skilled and compassionate care to several of my immediate family members in the past.  The term “Family Doctor” is a common one.  In our family we have a “Family Neurosurgeon”.  When it was apparent that conservative treatment had failed, I didn’t hesitate to contact Dr. Miranne.  Dr. Miranne reviewed my diagnostic studies with me and was very patient as he outlined my options.  He gave a detailed explanation of the surgical procedure as well as what to expect in the postoperative period.  I had total confidence in him on the day of surgery and throughout my recovery.  The care I received from Dr. Miranne was exceptional and I would recommend him without hesitation.  – Cindy     Dr. Miranne has performed six surgeries on me since 2004.  He continually gets me back on my feet and back to my life.  I have the utmost trust in him.  So much so, that I have recommended him to my family and friends.  I wouldn’t trust my spine to anyone else. – Charleen

What more can I say than “Thank you, once again!”  I had to smile when last week I thought, I’m too old for this, and then realized that most people are probably only just starting their journey at this age.  In my case, I feel like you’ve watched me “grow up” through the years, and you have always been there when I needed you.  By now, you must realize that I would NEVER let another doctor touch my spine!  I feel incredibly blessed to have gotten so much relief from each and every surgery, and I don’t take that lightly!  I’ve always understood the importance of going into these surgeries with a positive mental fortitude.  I know that 22 years ago, when I first walked into your office that I picked the best there is!  And thank goodness for that, because who would have ever thought that I would be back so many times.  I can’t dwell on the past and wonder why, because I think so much of life’s circumstances defy explanation.  I like your comment that “life is dynamic”.  I know that there is still much healing to take place, but the results have been so remarkable!  There has even been a wonderful surprise that I was not expecting.  When my husband wraps his arms around me, his arm crosses the uppermost part of mine. For years, I would wince at the pain that I felt with pressure on the left side.  I always assumed it was associated with my broken arm.  I’ve sprained everything imaginable, but waited until I was 50 years old to chase a puppy around the house, slip on a wet spot in the kitchen and go down so hard as to separate and break my arm/shoulder.  I just assumed the pain was associated with that injury.  Well, the first time he wrapped his arms around me after surgery, I didn’t feel any pain.  What a sweet and precious gift!!!!!  I look forward to seeing you on a more casual basis at Tulane sporting events and I thank you with all of my heart for the most treasured gift of an overwhelmingly enhanced quality of life!   – Elizabeth

Working as a Surgical Assistant/PA at East Jefferson, I had a front row seat to the many surgeons that operate on a daily basis.  So it was no mystery when I needed an anterior cervical fusion in 1992 and lumbar diskectomy in 2006 and 2008 who my choice of neurosurgeons would be.  Dr. Richard Corales’ surgical expertise and bedside manner had made my decision an easy one.  My rule of thumb is – when you need surgery, ask the OR personnel or other doctors who they would go to.  I took my own advice and am glad that I did.  I am back to the activities I enjoyed before my surgeries and have Dr. Corales and his staff to thank. – Debbie   My experience with Dr. Corales and his staff was exceptional.  They are a perfect model of how a doctor’s office should operate by putting patients’ needs first.  The staff was friendly and very helpful in preparing me for my surgery.  I was impressed with the fact that every appointment I had with SBS was on time, making my commute from Houma an easy one.  Dr. Richard Corales was a godsend, making me and my family feel very comfortable with information and compassion for my surgical procedure.  I give SBS, Dr. Corales and his staff my highest recommendation.  Thanks for helping me in my time of need!!! – Chad

My name is Laura and I am a lung cancer patient.  On July 14, 2011, my oncologist informed me that I now had a brain tumor as well.  She then recommended Dr. Everett Robert, and my husband and I met with him the following day.  He immediately put us at ease by taking the time to answer all of our questions while he explained the options that were available – surgery being the obvious choice in my case.  He made us very aware of any possible side effects that may occur and we felt confident in Dr. Robert’s care.   On July 19th, the tumor was successfully removed.  I was released from the hospital several days later and to our surprise, Dr. Robert gave us his cell phone number and told us to call him immediately if we had any concerns or questions, no matter what they might be.   In today’s world. there are some doctors who barely take time to answer a few questions because of being over-booked, and here is a doctor who would actually give you his cell phone number.  It did not take long for my husband and I to realize that the bottom line for Dr. Robert is his patient’s health and well being.  When you are a cancer patient, that is the most important factor on your road to recovery. – Laura   On the morning of May 6, 2011, my whole world changed.  When I tried to get out of bed and stand on my right leg, the pain that I experienced was horrific.  I could not walk or stand on my own.  Needless to say, I was so scared and could not understand what was happening to me.  I had never in my 71 years experienced this type of pain.  The best way I could explain how it felt was as though someone was shooting me with a taser gun in my right leg and under my knee cap.   In effect, I was confined to my sofa, or my mother’s wheelchair.  This pain kept my life on hold for three weeks.  My lifestyle previously was that of cooking, working around the house and yard, vacationing and attending many social functions.  I was totally miserable. After many different types of medical studies, MRI’s, and lots of medication, I wanted it to be over.   On May 23, 2011, three weeks from the day it all started, my dear friend Dr. Kelvin Contreary introduced me to Dr. Everett Robert of Southern Brain & Spine.  When I saw Dr. Robert, I knew he was the answer to my problem.  He was so pleasant and interested in me and my pain, and wanted to help me get back to the life I knew.  His astute diagnosis after reading my MRI on his computer found him scheduling me for immediate surgery for an L2-3 herniated disc in my lower back.  This herniation was causing pressure to the nerve leading to my right leg and knee causing the excruciating pain that I was experiencing.  His ability to diagnose and rectify my condition was aided by his surgical ability and experience in Neurosurgery – his specialty.   Three days later on May 26, 2011, I entered the hospital at 5:30 a.m., had surgery at 7:30 a.m., and was back in my room at 11:30 a.m. A few hours later I was able to get out of bed and walk down the hall PAIN FREE – I was ecstatic.  The only thing I could do was thank God and Dr. Robert.  By 3:30 p.m., I was home with only a very small incision in my back.  No more pain pills.  Dr. Robert gave me my life back. In my followup visits with Dr. Robert, I continue to have great results.  I have total confidence in his surgical and cognitive ability as a Top Neurosurgeon.  I highly recommend anyone who is in any type of spine pain to visit Dr. Robert – just like he helped me, he will do his very best to help you!   – Sharry
